HTMA – HAIR TISSUE MINERAL ANALYSIS

Hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA), is an analytical test which measures the mineral content of the hair. The sampled hair, obtained by cutting the first inch and one-half of growth closest to the scalp at the nape of the neck, is prepared in a licensed clinical laboratory through a series of chemical and high temperature digestive procedures. Testing is then performed using highly sophisticated detection equipment and methods to achieve the most accurate and precise results.

Why is HTMA Important?

  • HTMA shows how the body’s energy system is out of balance and how to use nutrition and diet to correct it.

  • Once the body’s energy and stamina are restored, it can heal other problems on its own.

What CAN I learn from an HTMA test?

  • What your Metabolic Rate is.

  • What stage of stress and your stress levels are at.

  • How your Immune System is functioning.

  • Learn about your Adrenal & Thyroid Activity.

  • Your carbohydrate tolerance.

  • Your body’s energy levels.

  • If you are eating enough protein or too many carbs.

  • Tendencies for 30+ illnesses, often before they manifest.

  • Your personality tendencies.

More Information about HTMA:

- A soft tissue mineral biopsy that provides a reading of the mineral deposition in the cells and interstitial spaces of the hair over a 2-3 month period. - Only representative of the minerals and heavy metals in the hair, but since hair is a tissue, the information can be inferred for the rest of the body. - A screening test, not a diagnostic test. - Representative of an average rate of mineral and heavy metal accumulation in the hair sample over the previous 8-12 weeks. - The test I run is sent to a lab that does NOT wash the hair. There are only 2 labs in the US that do not do this. It’s super important for the accuracy of the results! - There is a lack of regulation for Hair Analysis and there are a lot of bogus tests out there – so using a certified, quality lab that goes through inspections regularly with the Department of Human Health & Services, HCFA. This is critical for accurate results. - The lab we chose uses ICP-Mass Spectrometry, the most modern and expensive technique to be applied to routine elemental analysis.

Why Hair Analysis?

  • Cells are the major site of metabolic activity.

  • Mineral levels in the hair are about 10x that of the blood.

  • Simple sampling and non-invasive.

  • Stable biopsy material requires no special handling.

  • Cost effective, accurate and reliable.

  • It’s a great test to run because its so affordable and provides foundational information to help support your healing journey!

Hair vs Blood?

  • Blood testing is excellent in many ways, but it not optimal for mineral or heavy metal levels.

  • Mineral levels are lower in the blood, so it makes the detection of trace elements more difficult.

  • Mineral levels are kept relatively constant in the blood due to the bloods desire for homeostasis.

  • Toxic metals are not found in high concentrations in the blood except after acute exposure.  This makes it difficult to test for low levels of chronic exposure and accumulations over time.

  • Toxic metals concentrate in the soft tissues (hair), not blood

  • Blood mineral levels are generally maintained at the expense of the tissues and minerals will be robbed from the tissues to maintain the blood.

  • Do not try to compare hair tests and blood tests side by side because they each represent a different homeostatic system and different body compartments.

More Information about HTMA:

Minerals are absolutely necessary for living!
Minerals = “Spark Plugs”
  • Enzyme Reactions – Minerals act as co-factors for thousands of enzyme reactions for every system in the body.

  • Nutrient Transfer – Minerals facilitate the transfer of nutrients across cell membranes, nothing gets in or out of the cell without mineral.

  • PH Balance – Minerals help keep the body in homeostasis.

  • Contract & Relax Muscles – Minerals are essential for the contraction and relaxation of every muscle.

  • Nerve Conduction – Mineral are important for nerve transmission throughout the body.

  • Obtained Through Food – They cannot be produced, so they must be obtained through food or supplementation.

What can NOT be learned from an HTMA test?

  • The total body load of any single mineral level.

  • The diagnosis of any disease or illness.

  • A “prescription” for specific mineral supplements to recommend.  NOTE:  We will make recommendations at a regular health consultation appointment based on these findings along with your results from your current Biofeedback Scan (a scan that has been done in the past 4-5 weeks).
